Katakolon port is an excellent gate to the Temple of Apollo Epicurius, which is one of the most important Ancient temples in Western Greece.
The Temple of Apollo Epicurius was built between 420-400BC by Iktinos, one of the two architects of the Parthenon of Athens. The Temple of Apollo is located 80 km away from Olympia and 7km away from Figalia, on the rocky area of Bassai.
History of the Temple of Apollo Epicurius
The temple was dedicated to God Apollo by the residents of Figalia, since the cult of the God in this area dates back to the 8th century BC. The name Epicurius derives from the Greek word “epikouro” which means “to aid”, to “help”.
God Apollo was offering his help to the locals, aiding them in their battles against the Spartans during the 7th century BC. There is also a reference that God Apollo helped the locals deal with the plague that hit them during the Peloponnesian War.
The Temple of Epicurius Apollo is built of limestone from the local quarries and is the best preserved temple in Greece, after the Temple of Hephaestus in Thissio Athens.
It is nominated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and combines all three rhythms of Greek architecture Doric, Ionian and Corinthian. The architect Iktinos wanted to combine different characteristics of the classical period and managed to blend harmoniously the archaic elements with more modern characteristics of the time. Most temples in Greece have an East – West Orientation, but this one has a North – South orientation, which is according to the Arcadian tradition.

If you decide to visit the Temple of Apollo, you will need to travel for an hour and a half, so make sure you make proper arrangements in advance so as not to lose time at all. The Temple of Apollo is an absolute must see for the area of Katakolon!
